The day spent in Stellenbosch

*We woke up early and enjoyed a nice breakfast at the B&B.  After that we walked around the town for a few hours.  I had to visit a shoe store to replace my boots (the only pair of shoes I brought for this trip) which had been completely soaked through for almost 24 hours.  I must say that we woke up to one of the most beautiful days we've enjoyed since we've been here - which was perfect for us walking around.  The town reminded me of Athens or Savannah except it is situated in the middle of mountains.

*A few us wandered onto campus and found the student center.  It's nothing like any student center that I've seen.  It looked like a terminal in the Atlanta airport.... complete with kiosk vendors, too.  We were on campus on a Saturday and it was buzzing -- there were lots of students coming into and out of classrooms.  On a Saturday.  I had considered looking at Grad School programs there but having class on Saturday was definitely a deal breaker.

*After we toured town for a while we piled on busses and headed to three different vineyards.  They were very different from one another and we had a blast.  I dumped any wine I got that wasn't red into other people's glasses and several people handed me their reds.  It worked well.  I am my mother's daughter.

Inbetween vineyards...

The group at the first vineyard -- The man in the background chopped off the top of our sparkling wine with a sword.

Our group at the third and most casual vineyard - it was literally in a cellar.  Very cool.

Explaining the story of the lady on the wine bottle.  The founder of the vineyard was having an affair with a slave woman - who he loved.  Her painting is on some of his wine bottles.

What every window looked like.... Not decoration.  Real web.

This vineyard had ants too.  This is what my hotel room looked like the night before.  Except to the 10th power.  They weren't kidding when they told me about Army Ants.

In a barrel.

Your view - in every direction - at each vineyard.  Overwhelmingly beautiful.

*After the vineyard tours we headed back to the B&B and boarded taxi cabs that took us to the legendary restaurant - Spier.  It has traditional African cuisine and is set up in a series of tents.  It also offers parties an option of sitting in a tree house while eating dinner.  We all got the buffet which meant that we could visit all the stations - get anything we wanted and for a limited number of times.  I tried antelope, ostrich, kudu, lamb and of course I got the chicken too.  They had calamari and different types of fish... lots of vegetables too.  The dessert line was incredible as well.  During our meal they painted our faces in traditional tribal paint and there were live performers as well.  The place was packed and very fun.  After dinner our escort from our apartment in Cape Town picked us up and brought us home.  I slept the entire way home!

Tribal Paint

Live entertainment.

Inside the tent.  It was crowded and so fun!
